Conservation Work With Other Local and International Partners
Tanzania includes significant portions of two of the eight biodiversity hotspots in continental Africa: the Coastal Forests of Eastern Africa Hotspot and the Eastern Afromontane Hotspot. However, 904 Tanzanian plant species are currently listed as threatened on the IUCN Red List, representing 8% of the total flora, including 361 tree species: 40 CR, 148 EN, 173 VU. Tanzania has higher tree diversity and a higher proportion of threatened trees than other countries in East Africa, with 1,765 tree species and 372 species assessed as globally threatened to date (21%), however, there are still more than 600 trees awaiting conservation assessments. In recognising the fact that working alone will be a challenge, TFS has established longstanding collaborations with conservation and scientific stakeholders both local and internationally. The partnership with local and International conservation partners such as Royal Botanic Gardens KEW, Missouri Botanic Garden, Botanic Garden Coservation International has developed an excellent knowledge of the national and regional flora, trained personnel in plant collection and identification, and exchange programmes.
